New project for 'at risk' teenage girls
|
One to One is supporting a new project to help teenage girls, some as young as 13, who are 'at risk'. Even if they nominally live with their families, their day-to-day life is on the streets, taking drugs. From there the step to prostitution, sexual abuse and rape is extremely short. Their families are dysfunctional, bedevilled by poverty, and often the parent or parents suffer from mental illness. Immigrant families are particularly vulnerable because they lack the safety net of an extended family.
The One to One project for 'at risk' teenage girls will provide a 'warm nest' for 15 young girls - both immigrants and Israeli born. The girls receive a hot meal and a supportive alternative to their non-functioning family home, keeping them within the community and away from the streets. They receive encouragement and help with homework as well as individual and group therapy to support their rehabilitation, building their confidence and self-esteem.

After-School Centre for Ethiopian Children in Netanya is Flourishing
|
To date there are 35 pupils aged 8-13 from low socio-economic backgrounds who participate in the One to One After-School Centre in Neot Hefziba, Netanya. This number is growing and due to the generosity of one of our donors, we are now providing daily hot meals as well as homework supervision, access to computers and a constructive environment to encourage the children's development and build their self esteem. The children have responded beyond all expectations and it is a privilege to witness their application and enjoyment of after-school life!

Sponsor A-Bike
|
Bring joy and happiness to Kids who have very little.
In the UK we take for granted the activities and clubs available for our children after school. However, In Israel many children finish school at 2.pm and have nothing to do for the remainder of the day, either because after school clubs to not exist, or their parents cannot afford such activities.
With this in mind, One to One launched a pilot programme in Jaffa, Netanya and Maalot to provide Bike Clubs for children from deprived areas. The clubs were open after school for 3 hours a week. One to One provided 40 bikes for the pilot programme, as well as the necessary training for the children involved.
You can help keep these kids on track.

Juedean Desert Trek 8th - 16th November 2008
|

The nation of Israel declared its independence in 1948, making 2008 it's 60th anniversary. To celebrate this occasion, we designed a special trek starting at Metzokei Dragot and continuing through the Judeay Desert to Masada.
After 6 days, 57 intrepid trekkers arrived at the top of Massada. Awaiting their arrival were ten gifted children from the Musician of Tomorrow - an organisation set up by the world-renowned violinist, Maxim Vengarov. Under the wonderful direction of Anna Rosnovsky (the retired first violinist from the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra), the children aged between 6 - 10 played a selection from the classics to enthralled trekkers.

These children all come from disadvantaged families in the Galil and are supported by One to One

Jews of Belarus need our help
|
Belarus, part of the former Soviet Union, has virtually no natural resources and a people surviving in extreme poverty. The Jewish community is still substantial, with many living in very difficult circumstances in and around Minsk. The UJIA and World Jewish Relief provide assistance but, as in Israel, there are many sad and needy cases that fall through the net. Many babies are being born with physical and mental disabilities due to the ongoing effects of Chernobyl and also a severe shortage of folic acid, vitamins and enriched food. Some Jews in outlying areas find themselves isolated and alienated from their countrymen. Our trekking Rabbi, Barry Marcus, has twinned the Central Synagogue with the synagogue in Minsk but we can do so much more to help. To make a donation please contact rita@one-to-one.org
