New project for 'at risk' teenage girls
|
One to One is supporting a new project to help teenage girls, some as young as 13, who are 'at risk'. Even if they nominally live with their families, their day-to-day life is on the streets, taking drugs. From there the step to prostitution, sexual abuse and rape is extremely short. Their families are dysfunctional, bedevilled by poverty, and often the parent or parents suffer from mental illness. Immigrant families are particularly vulnerable because they lack the safety net of an extended family.
The One to One project for 'at risk' teenage girls will provide a 'warm nest' for 15 young girls - both immigrants and Israeli born. The girls receive a hot meal and a supportive alternative to their non-functioning family home, keeping them within the community and away from the streets. They receive encouragement and help with homework as well as individual and group therapy to support their rehabilitation, building their confidence and self-esteem.

After-School Centre for Ethiopian Children in Netanya is Flourishing
|
To date there are 35 pupils aged 8-13 from low socio-economic backgrounds who participate in the One to One After-School Centre in Neot Hefziba, Netanya. This number is growing and due to the generosity of one of our donors, we are now providing daily hot meals as well as homework supervision, access to computers and a constructive environment to encourage the children's development and build their self esteem. The children have responded beyond all expectations and it is a privilege to witness their application and enjoyment of after-school life!

Sponsor A-Bike
|
Bring joy and happiness to Kids who have very little.
In the UK we take for granted the activities and clubs available for our children after school. However, In Israel many children finish school at 2.pm and have nothing to do for the remainder of the day, either because after school clubs to not exist, or their parents cannot afford such activities.
With this in mind, One to One launched a pilot programme in Jaffa, Netanya and Maalot to provide Bike Clubs for children from deprived areas. The clubs were open after school for 3 hours a week. One to One provided 40 bikes for the pilot programme, as well as the necessary training for the children involved.
You can help keep these kids on track.

Jews of Belarus need our help
|
Belarus, part of the former Soviet Union, has virtually no natural resources and a people surviving in extreme poverty. The Jewish community is still substantial, with many living in very difficult circumstances in and around Minsk. The UJIA and World Jewish Relief provide assistance but, as in Israel, there are many sad and needy cases that fall through the net. Many babies are being born with physical and mental disabilities due to the ongoing effects of Chernobyl and also a severe shortage of folic acid, vitamins and enriched food. Some Jews in outlying areas find themselves isolated and alienated from their countrymen. Our trekking Rabbi, Barry Marcus, has twinned the Central Synagogue with the synagogue in Minsk but we can do so much more to help. To make a donation please contact rita@one-to-one.org

Your date for backgammon and poker
|

We are delighted to tell you that 2008's Charity Backgammon and Poker Tournament will take place on Sunday 11th May at Sketch, who have generously, once again, offered us the whole venue, including the upstairs restaurant and cigar lounge.
The 2008 Backgammon and Poker Tournament promises to be a fantastic event. The evening starts with a champagne reception followed by exciting action filled Poker and Backgammon play. Drinks and food will be served throughout the evening. To complete the night we will be holding a live auction of collectables, delectables and indispensables
All proceeds from the evening will go towards helping us support the treatment of more and more children with HIV/AIDS in Africa, and bringing Palestinian and Jewish children together in cohesive community activities to help underpin peace and reconciliation in the region.
50% of Backgammon bets during the evening, and 50% of the Poker Tournament buy-ins will be donated to the Charity. Whether you are a 'professional' or 'amateur', everyone is promised a great time for a great cause!
The entrance fee for all players is £365 which is all it costs to make a huge difference to one child's life for a whole year. Spectators pay £100.
We hope that we can count on your support to join us, and bring as many friends as possible to an evening that is hugely important to our charity and its beneficiaries.

Judean Desert Trek 2008 in celebration of Israel's 60th Anniversary
|
Between 8th - 16th November, we will walk 100km from Yad Mordechai to Massada - beginning with a visit to one of the projects that you will be supporting and ending with a relaxing weekend at the Dead Sea. Over six days you will experience another life - the simple and uncomplicated life of the desert, without normal creature comforts. You will see breathtaking sights and walk through beautiful terrain normally inaccessible to tourists, accompanied by camels carrying the luggage and supplies.
What you will get in return will be one of the most enthralling, challenging and satisfying experiences of your life. You will also be helping to maintain the many after-school programmes which give so many abused and deprived children opportunities they would not normally experience.
Why should you join us? Watch this video clip from last year's trek to find out!
